For
only the second time in Miami Dade County Public School
history an African American was elected to serve as vice
chair. Dr. Robert B. Ingram beat out two other candidates
for the position. Nominated by the Honorable Betsy Kaplan
they declared Dr. Ingram the winner in the election conducted
during the school boards reorganization meeting. "I
am honored to have been elected by my colleagues to serve,"
Dr. Ingram told his board members. "As vice chair,
I will make every effort to work with our newly elected
Chair Dr. Michael Krop to reinvigorate our board and deliver
a unified, unmistakable message and movement that uplift
our students, faculty and staff." Before being elected
to the fourth largest school district in the country Dr.
Ingram was the first African American police officer to
be assigned to the all-white section of downtown Miami,
Florida. His interpersonal skills and professional abilities
led him to become Chief of Police of the City of Opa-locka,
Florida and later City Manager of the City of South Miami,
Florida. Not only that, Dr. Ingram was the first popularly
elected Mayor of the City of Opa-locka and the only Mayor
to be elected to six consecutive terms. He is a person
of firm conviction, who possesses exceptional management
skills and a keen sense of equity. Besides being a school
board member Dr. Ingram serves as Assistant to the President
for Urban Affairs at Florida Memorial College.
