As
part of its Miami-Dade/Africa Sister School initiative,
Miami-Dade County School Board Member Dr. Robert B. Ingram,
brought together students, mentors, teachers, and community
participants to share in an African "Rites of Passage"
workshop held at Carol City Middle School on Saturday,
February 8th, 2003. The event, which featured "Le
Ballet Ivoire Spectacle" a traditional African
Dance group from Cote D'Ivoire, also showcased authentic
African cuisine, African-American literary exhibit and
African Arts and Crafts. Dr. Ingram reminded participants
that the understanding of their history must be fundamental
in all of their undertakings, "You are only
as strong as your roots," says Dr. Ingram.
The Miami-Dade/Africa Sister School
Project, a partnership between the Miami-Dade School Board
and the Foundation for Democracy in Africa, was developed
to create an enabling environment for students to understand
and appreciate the people and culture of Africa.
