Dr.
Robert B. Ingram, Board Member for District I, hosted
a "Read to Lead" reception and read-a-thon last
Wcdnesday at Nathan B. Young Elementary School in Opa-locka
to honor students for their reading achievements. Twenty
Lakeview Elementary School children were presented with
"Read To Lead" awards for successfully completing
their reading assignments.
The read-a-thon featured notable guests
including, former "Miami Vice" star Phillip
Michael Thomas, Miami-Dade Commissioner Barbara Carey-Schuler
and City of Opa-locka Mayor Alvin Miller, reading to students
from their favorite children's books.
"Parents, our community, and the school
district must work together to improve student achievement
through reading. District l embarked on the "Read
to Lead" initiative with the firm belief that reading
expands each students ability to articulate thoughts,
write, compute, and think. Reading also enlarges one's
world and creates a vision for those who may not have
had one," said Dr. Robert lngram. "May these
reading adventure. awaken each child and spark an interest
in learning and a lifelong reading habit."
