Dr.
Robert B. Ingram. Miami-Dade County School Board Member
from District 1, sent a group of 39 students and six chaperones
on a trip to historic St. Augustine and Orlando's Universal
Studios, July 25 and 26. The tour, an incentive for establishing
good reading habits in students, is part of lngram's "Read
to Lead" initiative for District 1 schools.
The
group, known as "Dr. Bob's Reading Leaders,"
included student representatives from Brentwood, Oak Grove
and Scott Lake elementary schools. They toured St. Augustine's
Ft. Mose as well as the oldest house and the oldest schoolhouse
in the United States. Other site visits included the Whetston
Chocolate Factory, where students learned about candymaking.
Learning
was reinforced during the trip through intergroup sharing.
"Reading enlarges one's world and creates a vision
for those who may not have one," said Dr. lngram.
This
was the first opportunity for many students to travel
outside their hometown. "May these adventures awaken
each child and spark an interest in learning and a lifelong
reading habit," said Ingram.
