Dr.
Robert B. Ingram, Miami-Dade County School Board Vice
Chair, ended his month-long marathon of speaking engagements
about African American history on February 28 at a luncheon
in Opa-locka with African American agents and employees
of the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Agents Cassandra
Joseph and Jeral Floyd presented Dr. Ingram with an Outstanding
Service to Humanity award.
Miami's
first African American police officer assigned to the
then all-white downtown area in 1962, Dr. Ingram shared
some humiliating incidents he had experienced, specifically
after he was sworn into the U.S. Army. He and 25 fellow
inductees, who were white, were ordered to eat in a downtown
Miami restaurant only to be told that he had to eat in
the kitchen. Pointing out that segregation and discrimination
are not just in the distant past, Dr. Ingram declared
that he was only able to break down barriers because of
others who have paved the way before him.
